This project was initially an investigation into how we interact with water and precipitation in our daily and seasonal lives. Through observation of existing systems in Bozeman, Montana, I examined our daily and seasonal interactions with water and precipitation, focusing on snowfall in particular.

From January to March, I observed the way snowfall impacts sidewalks and identified areas for improvement. Specifically, I focused on Sec. 34.06.030 of the municipal code, which requires snow and ice removal from sidewalks. Based on my observations, I developed a series of designs aimed at interrupting existing systems and improving snow removal processes. These designs include overhangs, awnings, and large balconies that can be attached to buildings and sidewalks to proactively “remove” snow from sidewalks.
